Your toilet probably works harder than any other fixture in your home. But most of us don’t think about it—unless something goes wrong.
And while we usually don’t want to spend money replacing our toilets, they’re like any other piece of equipment. Sometimes, they wear out.
There’s no benefit in keeping an old, efficient, or problematic toilet. They can lead to wasted water, frustration, and damage. Big water bills can be a constant.
When you see these signs, it’s time to start thinking about replacement.
#1) Visible Cracks
Cracks in the bowl or the tank, even small ones, can lead to leaks and water damage. Eventually they can even lead to structural failure.
There is no way to reliably repair cracks! You need professional help from your local Houston plumber.
#2) Constant Clogging
Check out our last post on this very issue. If you’re mindfully flushing and you’re not using too much toilet paper, then your toilet could be worn out, inefficient, or too old.
It may be time to get a modern toilet that can handle the demands your family places upon it.
#3) Wobbly or Loose Toilets
Wobbly toilets tend to have damaged flanged, or they can be a sign of a rotten subfloor. That means leaks at the base of the toilet, foul odors, and eventual structural damages that can be quite serious for your home.
While there are ways to fix a flange, a new unit is often the best solution.
#4) Constant Repairs
If you have to repair flappers, fill valves, handles, or other components on a regular basis, it indicates aging internal components.
Replacing your toilet can save you a lot of time and money.
A toilet that runs constantly is another sign as well.
#5) It’s Uncomfortable or Outdated
If you’re overweight, have bad knees, or are just getting older, then many older toilets might not be right for you. An ADA toilet might be your best bet. ADA toilets are taller and easier to sit on.
Plus, old, discolored, and stained toilets can distract from your bathroom’s aesthetics. Persistent hard water stains, chips, or faded colors can make your bathroom look dated, which in turn makes it less pleasant to use.
